These lovely ladies have been a couple for four years, with a 10-month engagement and managed to pull off one darn cool backyard wedding at their private property in Perth. Sandie Bertrand Photography was there to catch it all on camera, so scroll down for the goods, guys…
THE VENUE “We had just bought our house and had started the process of thinking about where we might get married when the idea of doing it at home came up. Given we had already started doing some renovations it was perfect timing. We never really considered any other locations – we loved the idea of having this memory at our first home forever, even if it was a pretty ambitious idea to get everything we wanted done in the time frame.”
THE VIBE “We really wanted to create a relaxed atmosphere where everyone we loved could come together to just have a really great time. We didn’t want the day to be stressful and exhausting or too formal. We love good music, great food and good quality wine and beer (who doesn’t?!) so we just focused on these things and didn’t worry too much about the little things.”
FAVE DETAILS “All the fairy lights we put up from Bunnings looked amazing, particularly in the dusk as we got married over our front yard and arbour that Hannah built. The table decorations [and] the photo board showing all the work we had done on the house/ garden so our friends and family could see the before and after.”
MEMORABLE MOMENT “My (Ellie) favourite moment was when we came back from photos and we were in the house while all the guests were arriving. We had champagne on arrival (definitely recommended), we could hear everyone chatting and having a good time outside – everyone was just buzzing, occasionally people would pop in to say hi and give us a big hug. It was so special, the atmosphere was amazing and it was at this moment that it really felt like we’d pulled everything off.”
MARRIAGE MEANS “When Hannah and I first got together it wasn’t legal for us to be married in Australia. Being gay, at that time, meant letting go of the idea of being married, so it does lose some of the importance that it might hold otherwise. In a way, this meant there was slightly less pressure on what this day should ‘look like’. It was definitely still something we both wanted but our relationship and us being together is the most important thing we can have. We like the idea of being linked together in this way though.”
A WORD OF ADVICE “We planned the wedding we thought we would have the most fun at, and as a result, just had the best time. We got up in the morning and went for breakfast together and as there were few formalities after the ceremony we could just really enjoy ourselves and hang out with our friends and family. We think your wedding should be a reflection of you, there is no right or wrong answer – just make sure you choose something you will love.”
STANDOUT VENDORS “Sandie Bertrand Photography was just awesome, she had perfect locations nearby and did a great job helping us. Neither of us love getting photos taken, but it was a really easy fun part of the day and Sandie got the photo’s we didn’t even know we needed/ wanted. We have currently narrowed our selection down to 350 photos – so still trying to choose ones for print. The Food truck, Sultan Pepper Food Truck were amazing, Ashley Williams (hair) and Jacqui Bradfield Makeup. Two Cent Professionals were so good and having a live band meant it was just a fun atmosphere.”
