Whilst 2020 was a bit of a write-off, love still found a way, and thanks to a heap of legendary couples and their vendors, we have continued to share a whole heap of wedding inspo throughout. Which means…today we are kicking off our 2020 Best Of series with the good stuff – more specifically, the baked good stuff!

We’ve trawled through our blog, Insta and Pinterest pages and according to you guys, these were your faves! Whilst we’ve got single tiered cakes, towering cakes and every cake in between, one thing is for sure, you guys really do love your floral toppers!

This year we were chuffed to see a few of our all-time faves make the list including Sydney-based Stacy Brewer Cakes and Melbourne-based creators Miss Ladybird Cakes and Mad About Cakes. Cakes for days.

Now, in no particular order, we present to you 10 scrumdiddlyumptious towers of sugar and cream…

Hannah & Zee, Sydney, NSW

Bride, Hannah, is a pretty darned talented pastry chef, so when her big day rolled around, nothing short of spectacular was going to suffice. One cake? Nope. Two cakes? Nope. Hannah created four show-stopping pieces herself, via her own business Gracious Honey, to share with her guests. Whilst we were smitten with every single one, this lamington cake stole our hearts. You can take a peep at the other three beaut creations here. With captures by Miko, of Tones & Harmony, you’re in for a treat! Whilst you’re there, be sure check out the snazzy neon/ floral bedecked display (thanks to the good people from The Lillipillian) that housed the four masterpieces. You can take a squiz at more of Miko’s real weddings right here.

Rachel & Maitland, Melbourne, VIC

A big heck yes to this single-tiered beauty, right?! Proving that one tier is just as striking as multiple, Miss Ladybird Cakes has nailed it again (click here for more of her cakey goodness!). One of the bride’s favourite details from the day, this pretty pink creation tied up the couple’s colour palette perfectly. Keen to peep the florals that went alongside? Pop on over here to catch wonder woman Ashleigh Haase Photography’s snaps from the day or here to squiz more real weddings she has shot. In search of some Melbourne based blooms to make your colour scheme pop? Head on over here for a list of our faves.

Mon & James, North Coast, NSW

Does a coastal, Hamptons vibe, complete with textural blooms and swathes of soft pink sound like a dream? Well, Mon & James’ Mid North Coast wedding was all that and more. Tying it all together was the couple’s triple layer chocolate and white chocolate mud cake, wreathed in orchids and soft roses. A big thanks to Sweet Love Cake Couture for gracing our peepers with this vision. A shoutout also to one of our fave NSW lens ladies Nic, of Fox & Kin, who captured the whole day in full. Keen to catch more of her handiwork? Pop on over here.

Cait & Joey, Sydney, NSW

When we first spotted this drop-dead gorge Stacy Brewer Cakes creation, we quite literally stopped in our tracks (mid-scroll, jaws agape). Sponge, cream, jam and blooms in abundance are what dreams truly are made of. And if you like this, you sure are set to be smitten with the rest of this couple’s fab day, as captured by HM fave Damien Milan. Click here to catch the whole shebang. Amanda & Chris, Bruny Island, TAS

Who says you can’t have a lavish wedding cake at your intimate elopement?! Not us, that’s for sure! Amanda & Chris agree wholeheartedly which is why they went all out with their OTT Cakes number and the extra-in-the-best-way dried floral topper. If you’re all about that moody Tassie lighting, we recommend taking a peep at the rest of this day here, as captured by Jon Gazzignato. On the hunt for Tassie vendors? We know a good bunch! Pop on over here for details.

Coco & Mark, Melbourne, VIC

Pink and red may well be one of our fave colour combos, and Coco & Mark took this theme and ran with it, all over Melbourne. Naturally, we’re utterly taken with the whole damn day, Bloom Boy’s floral magic included. It comes as no surprise that this delightful cake from Torte By Mirjana (sticky date and salted caramel flavour, guys!) has made its way into this scrummy roundup with the bride sharing, “Guests still tell us it was the best wedding cake they’ve ever had”. Now, head on over here to catch the rest of It’s Beautiful Here’s magical snaps.

Emily & James, Perth, WA

Sweetness incarnate, Emily & James’ sweet but simple lemon madeira cake warms our heart and is evidence that sourcing sweet lil’ cake toppers is a worthwhile pursuit. If you need more than this lovely cake from Parella’s Cafe to get you motivated to check out this big day, take a read of this, “Our inspiration was the golden tones and earthen hues of the seventies, Little House on the Prairie, music festivals, Bilbo Baggins’ birthday party in Lord of the Rings and the dance scene below deck between Rose and Jack on the Titanic.” Enough said, right? You can find the rest of Nectarine Photography’s snaps here.

Kate & Dom, South Coast, NSW

Now, it wouldn’t be a cake roundup without a good ole’ donut cake, would it? In a genius move, Kate & Dom combined the best of both worlds with a cake/donut stack combo by The Naked Cake. Utter brilliance. Serving up coastal vibes and serene colours, you can catch the rest of Kate & Dom’s big day, via Josh Jay’s wonderful snaps, right here. It’s not just the cake that has us drooling, however. One of our fave caterers in all the lands, Jo of Garnish Creative Catering, was serving up savoury morsels, so best remember that name. Keen on a South Coast Soiree for yourself? Pop on over here for vendors galore.

Ellie & Steve, Southern Highlands, NSW

The easiest way to all of our hearts here in the HM office has to be sticking a load of pressed blooms over mounds of sugar and cream. And it’s no wonder that Ellie & Steve’s cake was one of your faves too. The cake was the bride’s dream come to life and created by her much-loved mumma. “Each of those flowers was handpicked, carefully dried a month or so out from the wedding, and on the day we decorated the cake with the dried flowers ourselves.” Sweet, huh? Well, just your wait till you catch the rest of Scott Surplice’s happy snaps here. Thank us later!

Emily & Jacob, Pennyroyal, VIC

Rounding out this delish top ten is Mad About Cakes wholesome carrot cake with buttercream frosting. Now that is a combo you sure can’t go wrong with and with this Melbourne based baker behind the whisk, it’s bound to be the best one you’ve ever tasted. Hot tip: These guys offer an extensive range of gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan options too! Now, best pop on over here to peep the rest of Emily & Jacob’s big day because Miranda Stokkel’s captures are something special. Did we mention the divine emerald green colour palette? Hop to it!
