PIA & SUNY'S MELBOURNE WEDDING

You best believe Pia and Suny’s union stopped us in our tracks. Immortalised by photo/video dynamic duo Be Here Be Now, the aesthetics are on point (that red wedding dress, that greenery!) but this Melbourne party was much more than a pretty facade.

The planet-lovin’ pair looked at each wedding day element through an eco lens, opting for paperless invites, a vegan menu, and super sweet place cards crafted from leaves off the couple’s own lime tree.

Their intentional approach extended to the topic of tradition too. Pia explains below that many western wedding customs were new to Suny, prompting them to critically question which were a good fit and which could be ditched. “Sometimes you’ll like doing things not in-line with tradition. But it’s more fun and satisfying to follow your heart.” Couldn’t have said it better ourselves.

THE VENUE “I was looking at hiring plants. . . and stumbled across Glasshaus, realising instead of bringing the plants to us, we could go to the plants! I had always dreamed of getting married in a garden; Glasshaus provided that without relying on Melbourne’s tumultuous weather. When I took Suny there to ‘buy some plants’, he took the deepest breath in and said how incredible the energy was. I told him it was also a wedding venue, and his whole face lit up. We didn’t visit any other venues.”

THE DRESS “I knew from the start I did not want to wear white. I bought a beautiful dress online a year in advance, but the mock-up that arrived… completely fell off my body. Thank goodness they refunded me, and I walked into Duchess Boutique a few days later. The store vibe was down-to-earth, and everyone who worked there was so genuine, kind, and supportive. It was an amazing experience, and I highly recommend them, especially if you want to wear something colourful.”

TALK ABOUT TRADITION “As Suny did not grow up with Western-style weddings, [many] traditions were discussed and questioned. For instance, “Why do you get a bouquet and I don’t?!”. There was not one reason I could think of, so we both got bridal bouquets. We did a first look and met at a corner to surprise each other. We also both chose to walk down the aisle, make speeches, write our own vows, and sit with guests banquet-style.”

STANDOUT VENDORS “Chris and Shani (Be Here Be Now Photos and Films) looked after us all day. They even got construction signs moved that were in the way [of] our first look. [Our celebrant and MC] Precious kept bringing us G&Ts and made us laugh so much. Aleks, our DJ, told us we provided the most comprehensive [brief and the] biggest ‘no-play list’ they ever received. She smashed it out of the park.”
