If your vibe is less ‘wedding’ and more ‘party’, then Izzie and Tom are your kinda people. “We wanted it to be a bit… feral, and loose! We didn’t want it to be serious and solemn,” shared the duo of 11 years, who met on their very first day of uni. These cool cats intentionally designed their Melbourne nups to maximise meaningful minutes with loved ones, explaining, “We wanted to have a good time and dance the night away.”
STACKS of Melbourne talent in Izzie and Tom’s vendor team, including Black Finch Jewellery, known for their creative and contemporary designs, and Kat from It’s Beautiful Here, whose skills behind the camera never ever fail to blow us away.
It’s not your mother’s wedding, but by golly, we bloody love it! Although, Izzie did use her mum’s amazing vintage wedding jacket as the base of her bridal look – more on that below. Plus, a plethora of pics you’ll want to pin and some damn sage words from the Mr and Mrs…
THE VENUE “We knew we wanted a party more than a ‘wedding day’ and wanted to find a venue that felt like we could dance hard with all our friends. We had lots of interstate guests travelling, and Marama Winebar gave us the quintessential Melbourne autumn energy we were looking for – brown leaves falling, a heritage building on the corner within walking distance from our home, and long sunsets running around the streets of Carlton North. For the ceremony, the Victoria Registry at the top of the city is amazing. Beautiful and timeless, and it feels like you’re part of an extraordinary tradition of people falling in love.”
FAVE DETAILS “I loved getting ready with Izzie beforehand. We took a little portrait of each other on a disposable camera, and it’s a really special photo for us – right before we jumped in an Uber to go get married in the city.”
THE DRESS “My outfit took months to piece together. I started with my mum’s wedding jacket. It’s super cropped and has beaded fringing, so it’s quite bohemian to start with. I approached the look much more as an ‘outfit’ than a ‘dress’ moment. The dress was the hardest to find, I needed to match the shade of ivory with my mum’s 25-year-old jacket. Once I found the dress, I decided to ramp up the accessories to make it feel more like my personal style and bring in all these borrowed elements from my family (like my nana’s brooch).”
MEMORABLE MOMENT “Both of us come from families whose parents have been happily married for over 35 years. We come from really tight-knit groups. And they all love to dance. It took about 15 minutes into the dance floor for every bloke to have their shirt off, and Tom and I both get picked up and crowd-surfed around. A big highlight.”
LITTLE LOL “My dad is a notoriously bad speech giver. He got up there and told Tom marrying me was like learning how to live with a wild animal. Not to be tamed, but to be watched carefully, admired and maybe a little feared – HA!”
A WORD OF ADVICE “There are no rules. We spent the night before together, we met all our friends at our favourite cafe for breakfast on the day of our wedding, we walked in together. Don’t carry on traditions you don’t want to! Also, turn down your lighting. People like dancing in dark rooms—go get sweaty.”
STANDOUT VENDOR “Our photographer! Kat (It’s Beautiful here) – it’s like she had a body double. Somehow, she captured the entire day from every angle and gave us more photos than we could have hoped for from our three-hour time slot with her.”
