This New York living, city loving couple tied the knot in their hometown of Melbourne in an urban wonderland (well before COVID, of course). Their flowers, (made by a friend, Manouri Peiris) were simply stunning and their stationery was very cool (designed by the bride and groom themselves). One seriously talented photographer (and friend of Hello May), Jimmy Raper Photography, was there to document the day, so scroll down for more…

THE VENUE “Deciding whether to have our wedding in New York (where we live) or Melbourne (where we are from) was a big decision. Ultimately we decided to have it in Melbourne as I wanted my grandparents and all our family members to be in attendance. Because it was a destination wedding for many of our guests we wanted it to be inner city. We decided on Panama Dining Room as the interior is so well styled already, making it easy for us to plan from the other side of the world. The first time I saw the venue was when I was walking down the aisle!”

FAVE DETAILSThe menu/ place cards. These were printed in various colours and personalised for each guest. We named the tables after the streets of the West Village in New York. It was important to us that our home was represented on the day.”

THE DRESSI knew that I didn’t want any traditional wedding dress elements such as lace, tulle or embroidery. I wanted to make sure I still felt and looked like myself. I saw a Toni Maticevski dress early on and was drawn to its sculptural qualities. I made a few appointments at bridal boutiques in New York but didn’t find anything that compared to the Toni Maticevski dress, so I ordered it online and had it sent from Australia to New York. The hem was taken up and I was ready to go!”

CUTE CUSTOMWe had our celebrant Sally Hughes make reference to our grandparents’ wonderful examples of marriages. They were married young and through the many decades have remained ever so committed to each other. Their partner has remained the apple of their eye too!”

A WORD OF ADVICEAs long as your favourite people are in a room with plenty of delicious food and alcohol it will be a good day. Everyone says don’t sweat the small stuff and it is true. The small details will go unnoticed by most people. I even forgot to notice the small details, as I was too busy having fun!”

WE’RE GLAD WE… “Wrote our own vows, had it in Melbourne and had a lunch with our bridal party the day before along with their partners. It was a great warmup, really set the tone and calmed the nerves ahead of the big day.”
