In the dining room, with 100 roses, fairylights and Paul Kim’s romantic ballad Me After You flowing through the boombox, Claire and Syahmi asked that very special question. “I knew Claire wouldn’t want a public proposal,” says the groom, “so I decided to do it at our home with her favourite audience there. Our cats.”

Their day was a blend of tradition and fun, up-to-the-minute elements. These two legends had their Nikkah (ceremony) at Swan Valley Mosque and Islamic Centre. Later their reception, styled in happiness-inducing hues and vibrant blooms, would be hosted at chic warehouse space, Cleaver Street. But not before the couple of the hour ran around Leederville, their photographer, Twelfth., in tow, taking some of the coolest wedding portraits you’ve ever seen.

Scroll on as the newlyweds take us behind the scenes, from aesthetics, to outfits (hi there, Bec + Bridge), crowd-pleasing cake and DIY details.

An intimate, warehouse-style Perth reception venue

“We loved the intimate and natural vibe of Cleaver Street. As our wedding only had 40 guests we wanted one long dinner table for all our guests and the venue was perfect for that.”

A bright palette and plenty of petals

“We just wanted something natural and bright, with lots of flowers! We told the girls attending to wear bright colours and florals to match the overall vibe.”

Fave details: the wedding cake and table styling

“We absolutely loved the wedding cake from Kate Batter – the cake itself also tasted great and left the guests and ourselves wanting more. The floral details are amazing, the design of the venue with the flowers and the table design went well together.”

Do it yourself wedding elements

“Most of the wedding stationery was DIY (except the invitations’). The wedding favours are DIY too. We wanted to customise the favours and reflect a bit of us in them, hence the trading card pack for the boys and a little vanity kit for the girls. The bubble tea holders were also DIY by us…”

The bridal looks

“The ceremony dress is from Malaysia and it probably took me about 20 dresses until I decided on that one. I also took a bit to decide on the hijab, and got the store assistant to help me with styling as I have never worn one before. The reception dress is from Bec + Bridge. It had more of a spring/summer vibe, which I wanted to match the bright florals of the venue.”

Standout WA wedding vendors

“All our vendors were amazing. We appreciate all of them for making our wedding feel so special. As you spend most of your day with your photographer, make sure people get a good one. Elvan from Twelfth. was amazing and was more than a photographer that day, he also felt like a good friend.”
