Modern romance was the theme for Ash and Nic’s seriously cool wedding at one of our favourite spaces, The Wool Mill, in Brunswick. The creative pair, who work together in advertising, were married after almost nine years together and describe their love as, “enduring and unconditional, yet unafraid to break from tradition, be completely vulnerable and laugh so hard at itself.” Guys, we just can’t get enough of these two, who projected Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet onto a wall during the reception as a reflection of their own “wild, unpredictable” love, “albeit, a little less tragic,” says Ash.
The incredible team at Nudo helped bring the vision to life, while Rolan John Photo worked his magic behind the lens.
THE VENUE “The Wool Mill in Brunswick was the first venue we looked at, and after circling through a few other options, we landed right back where we started. Initially, we were a little intimidated by the ‘blank canvas’, which ironically turned out to be our favourite thing. There was so much room for customisation, and the fact there are multiple rooms and storeys felt like we could take our guests on a little journey without them needing to change locations.”
DIY “Nic’s lifelong obsession with arcade skill testers had to be represented. We purchased our own claw machine and Nic custom-designed plush toys of himself, me and our dog Mia for guests to win. We also knew our friends and family loved to party, so there were two things to bookend the whole day. On arrival, we forewent the usual canapés in favour of buckets of hot chippies, fully customised with a fun seagull motif. To end the night, I made take home hangover packs full of vitamins, eye drops, painkillers, mints and everything short of a bedside drip.”
REFERENCES “When I first got engaged, a family friend sent me a couple of issues of Hello May and the obsession began from there. It felt so nice to spend my weekend mornings having a coffee and flipping through for inspiration and dog ear-ing every second page.”
STANDOUT VENDORS “Rolan John was one of our non-negotiables – his work stood out as distinct and authentic. On the day, Rolan rocked up and instantly put everyone at ease. They say a good photographer goes unnoticed, but Rolan has such a happy and beautiful presence that was felt by all. He stuck around until the last sparkler went out, proving his dedication towards capturing EVERY single moment of the day.”
A WORD OF ADVICE… “If you’re fortunate enough to be able to afford one, the value of a wedding planner can absolutely not be understated – there is so much detail, consideration and expertise they offer across a range of things you’d never even think of. It also liberates you to actually enjoy the lead up together. While we happily lapped up the “you guys have all been so chilled in the lead-up to this” comments from family and friends before the wedding, the reality is we owe it all to Callin and the team at Nudo.”
