As two very laid-back people, Sarah and Boyd (parents of two little tots) admit that their wedding was long thought about, but last minute planned.
“Everyone we know would keep asking how the planning was going, we would just smile and nod and be like ‘oh yeah, we are having that big party with all those guests, better get onto that.’ We booked our photographer about a month out. Our DJ the week before, the cinematography a couple of days before the photo booth the night before and I booked our acoustic singer the day of the wedding even though I had never heard him play!”
Held in Byron Bay, the couple wanted to get married somewhere surrounded by lots of nature with both indoor and outdoor space that they could have complete control over.
“We didn’t really have a theme, more of a feeling. But if I had to pick the theme of our wedding I’d say pineapple-sparkly-copper-cutglass-protea-succulent haha. I realise none of those things go together, but that’s us,” explains Sarah, who loved the super cruisey vibe.
Captured by Heart and Colour, Sarah and Boyd’s big day include heaps of DIY, from succulent replanting to mirror painting, bar building and so much more. Despite all the gorgeous decor, Sarah was well-aware that all the attention would be on her, a nerve-wracking task for any bride, so she chose to make things a little more fun and easy-going.
“I decided to have I walk the line by Johnny cash as my aisle music, we love that song and I thought it would be fun to walk to Boyd to that song. It was a perfect choice, because as soon as it started playing I saw the smiles spread across our guests faces and they started clapping in time to the music. It totally lifted the mood and I wasn’t nervous at all,” says Sarah, who didn’t get her When Freddie Met Lilly gown until just seven days before the wedding!
Clearly a nontraditional couple, these two did things their own way, on their own time, leaving other brides and grooms-to-be with this sacred piece of knowledge.
“My best advice would be have the wedding you want. Not what other people expect you to have. If you want the big white traditional wedding, have it. If you want to get married barefoot in your backyard, do that. It’s your event, don’t try to meet other peoples expectations.”
