When Simon proposed, he accidentally handed Rachel a receipt instead of ring. “Certainly lightened the moment!” says Rachel cheekily who pulled her own unplanned prank by way of a million DIY decorations. “I may have a little bit of a problem with Op shopping and council clean ups haha. I may also have had a pretty EPIC vision that required a lot of handy man jobs haha? lucky the guys got so many sweet man skills!”
Captured by legendary photographer Scott Surplice of The Simple Things Studio, their wedding held at Kangaroo Valley Bush Retreat on the New South Wales south coast was awesome for a whole range of reasons – their venue could accommodate ninety per cent of their guests and also boasted an African fire pit where they could sit and roast S’mores; their DIY decorations turned out to create a rustic, fun, vintage, homely and perfectly mismatched atmosphere and last but not least, Rachel’s gown by Karen Willis Holmes looked absolutely incredible.
“I’m so proud of what we achieved considering it was all styled, made and collected by ourselves. From the stationary to the table runners my mum made, the Ikea mismatched tea towels used as napkins, the incredible hanging centrepiece which was old scrap metal we found in Simons mums shed, the $5 Op shop rug we found for the ceremony stage… everything was just how we’d pictured it, better even, and we feel so blessed that so many of our friends and family contributed to it to make it a reality.”
