Wholesome, heartwarming and somewhat serendipitous – we’re sure you’ll agree, Lulu and Yemo’s micro nuptials are pure magic. The bride’s cousin is the cupid behind this coupling. After meeting Yemo at a wedding, they had a hunch the two would make a perfect match, and they were right. “From the moment we started talking, we couldn’t stop,” shares the bride. “We spoke for three days straight, and we’ve been together ever since.”
Together for nine years, the soulmates made it offish with a chill, casual celebration, centred around simply enjoying precious time with the people they treasure. As you’ll read, plans came together perfectly and pretty spur-of-the-moment (on Valentine’s Day no less) while family were visiting for Lunar New Year. What wasn’t spontaneous, however, was the decision to have Kat from It’s Beautiful Here capture the occasion. “The moment I saw their photos, I knew they were the one,” explains Lulu. “Securing her availability was a top priority before we even booked our wedding date.”
More from this modern Melbourne fairytale below…
THE LEAD-UP
“We had originally planned to have our wedding ceremony in 2022, but it was postponed twice because of the lockdown. We thought, that’s fine. Without our families around, the ceremony just didn’t feel complete anyway. Instead, we asked It’s Beautiful Here to take some pre-wedding photos to capture that special moment, and we flew straight to Tasmania for [a] holiday. Fast forward to 2024, my family flew in from Shanghai to spend Lunar New Year with us, mainly to meet our 3-month-old baby. Yes, we had a baby! I thought it was the perfect time to finally celebrate with our loved ones. On short notice and with postpartum brain, I picked a date that was available for all the providers, and it happened to fall on Valentine’s Day. Everything lined up perfectly.”
THE WEDDING VENUE
“We wanted to keep things low-key and meaningful, so with just a handful of family, we chose the Victoria Registry [at the Treasury Building]. When it came to food, I knew I wanted something that felt like home, Chinese dishes we grew up eating. It was all about sharing love and making memories with the people who matter most. Flower Drum was perfect, the food was delicious, and the service was great!”
FAVOURITE DETAILS
“The walk from the Treasury Building to Chinatown, during Lunar New Year and on Valentine’s Day, was festive, full of flowers and great weather. Surrounded by our beloved families, everything felt so light and happy.”
MEMORABLE MOMENT
“Oh, we were late to the Treasury Building, worried we might miss our appointment and not be able to get married! We ran to the building, pushing our son in his pram. It was hilarious—and somehow totally symbolic of us as a post-COVID couple. We struggled and felt overwhelmed as new parents, but we loved and supported each other every step of the way. We’d been completely buried in the full-time job of caring for this tiny human, with little time just for us. But that day reminded us where we came from, and even with the added complexity in our relationship, it only made us stronger.”
WE’RE GLAD WE…
“… Were able to make it happen even while busy caring for our little one. It truly was the best day to remember with the people who matter most.”
