The Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP) in Sydney has a special place in the hearts of Lisa and Sam.

“We both work in the arts, that’s how we met! I used to work for ATYP and Sam runs a live streaming company, and one of their projects is streaming ATYP’s shows. We worked on a few shows together there and that was when the sparks started flying,” explains Lisa, adding it was only after some “toing and froing” with emails and missing each other because of work and overseas trips that the then work mates finally got together.

So it was only natural they’d hold their wedding celebration in the theatre’s incredible heritage building which sits on Sydney’s harbour. Hello May fave Nina Claire was there to capture the 70s-tinged festivities with ‘music curator and merchant of good times’ DJ Charlie Villas on the decks.

Bride Lisa knew exactly what she wanted in her bridal gown long before she had even met her dream man Sam. It just so happened her sister found the stunning gold sequinned Badgley Mischka dress on ShopBop quite soon after the couple’s engagement.

“It felt crazy to buy the first thing I looked at online but it was exactly what I wanted, and it was on sale! It came in the mail and it fit perfectly, it was meant to be. I didn’t tell anyone I had it, and it sat in a box at the top of my wardrobe for the whole engagement. The dress was probably the easiest thing in the whole process!”

The couple had “this thing”… they were in staunch agreement that because they’d only get to do this once, they’d make it memorable. So “romance and high drama” was their inspiration for the look and feel, and in this vein, the bride walked down the aisle with impact to Here Comes the Sun’ by the Beatles meeting her floral-clad man and exchanging Natalie Marie rings.

The day was made extra special thanks to the input of their family members; their brothers did all the heavy-lifting of furniture during ‘bump in’, while Lisa’s Grandma warmed their rings for them during the ceremony. Lisa’s sister even registered her car for her when she was feeling overwhelmed a week before the wedding! Now that’s a family we wouldn’t mind marrying into!
