LAUREN & JOEY’S PERTH WEDDING

Lauren and Joey’s wedding theme might just be one of the hottest we’ve seen: “Think Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet – candles, neon, religious iconography, lots of moody goth black with pops of ‘90s colour.” Hell YES.

Tying the knot in Perth’s inner-city, this power couple didn’t hold back trading in traditions for a vibe 100%, unapologetically them. To those in the wedding planning trenches, they say, “Find what makes you, ‘you’ and stick with it! [Keeping] up with the ‘next big wedding trend’ can send even the most organised couples into a decision spiral.”

We can’t stop ‘ooh-ing’ and ‘ahh-ing’ over absolutely everything, like Lauren’s gravity-defying bouquet or the beaut bride-tribe who each donned their own “perfect black dress” (with our faves Bec + Bridge spotted in the mix). And don’t get us started on Joey’s one-of-a-kind suit or the retro heart cake from Perth Cake Collective. FAVE DETAILS “We loved our cake from Perth Cake Collective – a dairy nut-free chocolate strawberry retro heart, with “Somos Bandidos” piped on top (because we’re each other’s ‘bandits’ for life). The custom-made neon heart centrepiece looked amazing against the black and Postal Hall’s skylight. Also, the florals – epic! Eden (Freakhaus) nailed the brief. I gave Eden a ‘liquorice allsorts’ of colours and pictures I liked (none of which were flowers) and asked her to create something. It was perfect. Lastly, after an amazing three-course meal, we had burgers and limoncello shots. Italians can’t finish a night without limoncello!”

THE DRESS “I met Rachel at Aubrey Rose Bridal. I love her designs and worked with her to find my perfect fit. I love all things fashion and never in a million years thought I would find ‘the one’ so easily – but I did! Kate from ILKA was a godsend. Her energy and skill were a blessing to this full-blown type-A bride. I had a clear vision of my bridal outfit changing throughout the day. Kate and the ILKA team crafted custom sheer fingerless gloves that, along with detachable off-the-shoulder sleeves and a post-ceremony quick hair change, turned my dress from ‘formal cathedral ceremony’ to ‘dancefloor ready reception’. I felt so chic and myself.”

REFERENCES “Hello May (obviously!), word of mouth, and Instagram. We met with a few vendors and knew immediately who we ‘clicked’ with. We had a really clear vision, and it was important that the people we worked with liked our idea and had the space to be creative to bring it all to life.”

MEMORABLE MOMENT “Following the wedding, we had an after-party in our suite. Heels came off, wedding cake and vino were everywhere, we were all dancing, laughing, and reminiscing about the day, and Joey ended up kicking everyone out as the sun came up.”

TALK ABOUT TRADITION “We had red chillies in our bouquets and on the tables – an ode to the ed horn-shaped talisman ‘corno’ (which in Italian means ‘horn’) that wards off bad luck and brings in good fortune. In keeping with the magical red chilli protection superstition, Joey wore red undies (that peeked out throughout our first dance!). Our godparents also both said grace in English and Italian.”

LITTLE LOL “We both missed our ‘you may now kiss the bride’ queue. We were standing there a little confused when the priest laughed, the guests laughed, the bridal party laughed, and then we realised. Joey asked, ‘Can I kiss her now?’. How romantic.”
