Not only did they not get engaged (“we just decided to get married, that’s what you do right?”), this fun-loving duo also decided to officially tie the knot before their wedding at Ferdydurke Bar with celebrants from The Altar Electric running the show. They then invited guests to their “wedding festival” via a video with flashcards, so to say this couple did their wedding their own way is an understatement, that’s for sure. Compliments to Kate and Dave from Good Day Rentals for styling this unique wedding, and Gold and Grit Photography for shooting it all, of course.

THE VENUE “It was the only scout camp that we could find with lots of on-site accommodation and when they said there was no noise restrictions, we booked straight away without having seen the venue. Then when we went to see it, we were stoked. We took our event stylist (Kate from Good Day Rentals) and together we roamed around the 80-acre property, checking out the myriad of amazing spots to have each different part of the wedding festival. It’s a Ukrainian Scout camp and has this Olympic-sized concrete pool which all three of us just loved because it is so weird and random and bloody enormous.”

THE VIBE “Thanks to the inspired styling by Kate from Good Day Rentals, our wedding had a Wes Anderson meets the Pink Flamingos theme. Think Moonrise Kingdom (due to the outdoorsy/scout element) mixed with touches of other Wes Anderson films and the legendary (to Victorian’s at least!) Meredith/Golden Plains Festival Pink Flamingo Bar, topped off with a tropical-calypso vibe for the stage/dance floor and a neon light extravaganza for the lounge area.”

FAVOURITE DETAILS “The Wes Anderson set piece that we used as a photo booth and a lounge area. The band was an absolute hit, too. I hear there was also an early evening flamingo race in the weird concrete pool. A bunch of our friends jumped in, fully dressed in their nice wedding gear and raced on inflatable flamingos. Thankfully, someone alerted our photographer and she captured it all. We also got a bunch of friends who love music to each do DJ sets after the band finished. It was so much fun- the dance floor was cranking for hours and we all got to dance through the floral installation that Good Grace & Humour created.”

THE DRESS “The main goal of the dress buying experience was to get as much free booze as we could. Myself and two friends hit up a range of wedding dress boutiques and I tried on everything from elegant gowns to over-the-top, sequinned, disco ball-style dresses. I ended up getting a dress from the designer section of David Jones by Ginger & Smart. It was a fun day with lots of laughs, but I always knew that I wanted a non-wedding dress.”

A WORD OF ADVICE “Every issue or problem can be fixed by just going to the pub. Or by making sure you get really great people and vendors to help you out along the way. OK, it’s mainly the second part of the sentence, as most things just get delayed if you go to the pub. We are really glad we had Good Day Rentals styling the wedding. She came up with heaps of ace ideas and recommended vendors and we were smart enough to just say yes to everything she suggested and trust that it would all turn out rad- and it did!”

STANDOUT VENDORS All of our vendors were amazing- I truly believe we got the best vendors Melbourne had to offer and those that were perfectly-suited to our style and sensibility. Of course, a big shout out goes to Good Day Rentals for the design, styling, furniture and neons, along with Good Grace & Humour for the inspired florals and Gold and Grit Photography for the amazing photos and being so easy to work with on the day.”
