Having been together for over ten years, it’s no wonder Kaija and David’s shared love of horror movies, heavy metal music and the dark arts make them a match made in heaven… or should we say heavenly hell?
Even Kaija and David’s chosen event photography duo Corinna and Dylan who shoot weddings almost every weekend of the year were stoked to be involved in the union of a two individuals so unique, yet so on the same page.
“From the moment we first met Kaija and David we could tell they were planning an event that was certainly not your typical wedding, but was one hundred percent them. They talked about their mutual love of horror movies and explained that they wanted to incorporate some dark and dramatic elements into their special day. And when Kaija mentioned she intended on wearing a black wedding dress and David a burgundy velvet suit jacket, our eyes lit up. This was going to be one rad wedding.”
And rad it was, filled with glittery skull table features, dark burgundy roses (which the florist from Miss Muffet’s Flower Boutique had to hand paint when they mistakenly arrived bright red) and misfortune cookies which Kaija explains are black fortune cookies that say honest/mean/rude things on the little paper inside. “Our guests loved them and they generated a lot of laughs,” adds Kaija.
Following an unfortunate bike accident where David broke multiple bones and needed a lengthy period of time to recover, the couple serendipitously landed on a new and ever-so-fitting date of Friday the 13th for their special day. Kaija recounts, “When it came to getting married on Friday the 13th, well? it was meant to be and I think it made our vibe/theme choice even more US’”.
So what does marriage mean to this unconventional bride who wore a customised black dress which could only be found on the bridesmaid dress rack?
“I have never been someone who believes in love at first sight, soulmates or that there is someone for everyone. I think you are incredibly lucky if you find someone that you get along with, laugh with, care for, and fall in love with. Getting married isn’t about being totally smitten with someone or finding the perfect person. Marriage is about making a promise to share your life with each other, trying when things get hard and never giving up on one another. It’s about supporting each other’s choices and meeting in the middle (even when one of you is extremely stubborn). It’s about creating memories, good, bad, sad, happy; it’s about the journey and creating them together. Most of all it’s about complementing each other not completing each other.”
Touchû? lady! We couldn’t have said it better.
