While organising their wedding, Issue 10 couple Claire, a biologist and Danial, an environmental engineer made every effort not to upset Mother Nature by sourcing second-hand cutlery, crockery and glassware, designing their own stationery and hiring talented local vendors.
£It’s really nice to think ethically about your wedding,” says Claire. £Try not to be wasteful because although it is a really special and important part of your life, it is just one day.
In return for being environmentally friendly, ironically they received rain. £? it was beautiful all morning and then started raining at the exact same time as the ceremony?” says Claire who, choosing to see it as a blessing rather than a curse, happily made her way down the aisle with Danial as planned.
The ceremony, beautifully shot by Enchanted Wedding Photography, was short and sweet and void of any meaningless traditions. £We are not very traditional or religious? One small thing that we did was get Danial’s sister to read a Malay poem as Danial’s family is from Malaysia. The other reading was about dinosaurs.
Despite the inconsistent downpour (which in fact made for some delightful photos) their day held at King Parrot Cottages nestled in Victoria’s stunning Otway Ranges, went ahead without a hitch. Well, almost…
£The donkeys were so cheeky! It took some very fancy footwork to keep my flowers safe and when they realised they weren’t going to get them, they decided to try my dress instead!
Having decided early on that she didn’t want to spend a fortune, Claire found her 70’s inspired outfit online. £? eventually I came across Dreamers & Lovers whose dresses were exactly the style I was after. From there on everything was so simple, I sent them my measurements and a few months later my dress arrived.
Their choice to take on a mountain of DIY projects (including their ceremony backdrop, table runners, planter boxes and flowers, to name only a few) was another way to save money and to introduce their own signature style.
£We wanted our wedding to suit our personalities and we wanted to do it on a budget. It was such a beautiful location – we just wanted to appreciate the natural environment and keep it sweet and simple,” says Claire. Our opinion? They nailed it.
