Dreaming of a Victorian country wedding that’s equal parts historic charm, epic landscapes, and complete privacy? Chatsworth House, tucked away in Victoria’s Western District, is your ultimate country wedding playground. From intimate “just us” gatherings to full-blown celebrations, this regenerative grazing property, lovingly cared for by the Whinney family since 2020, makes every wedding feel one-of-a-kind. Think boutique on-site stays, glamping under the stars, total culinary freedom, and a handpicked list of dream vendors – basically, everything you need to craft your perfect day. We caught up with owner Sarah Whinney to chat about why this is the go-to country wedding venue Victoria…
What makes Chatsworth House a special place to say “I do”?
“Chatsworth House is a private property, exclusively yours for your wedding day. With only a handful of weddings annually, you and your guests experience an intimate, unique celebration. There’s an energy about the property that’s hard to capture in words or photos, but when you arrive, you’re taken straight into this stunning pocket of rolling hills, ancient red gums, and a majestic 1860s bluestone homestead and gardens. The historic Longroom and on-site accommodation allow couples to fully immerse themselves in their day, from quiet moments to dancing the night away. Couples often say it’s romantic without fuss, and beautiful without even trying – and honestly, that sums it up the venue perfectly.”
Wedding spaces and experiences at Chatsworth House
“We like to think of the property as a beautiful blank canvas for couples to create their own bespoke wedding experience. You might choose to exchange vows in the Homestead Gardens, have drinks on the croquet lawn, then head into the Longroom for dinner and dancing — or mix it up however suits you. The Longroom seats up to 100 or fits 150 cocktail‑style, and it flows straight onto the north‑facing lawn beside the historic stables — perfect for mingling or adding a marquee if you’re planning something bigger. Everything is designed so your day can unfold naturally from one beautiful space to the next
How the team helps bring wedding visions to life
“We try to keep things simple, supportive, and stress‑free. Whether you’re planning a full‑scale styled celebration or leaning into a more hands‑on approach, we’re here to make sure it all feels doable. The only must‑have is a professional on‑the‑day coordinator of your choice – so you’re not worrying about timelines or logistics when you should be celebrating. Beyond that, we happily share our trusted suppliers, answer all the practical bits, and make sure the property is looking at its absolute best. We’re not hovering, but we’re always there when you need us — quietly in the background, keeping everything flowing.”
Wedding styles that shine at Chatsworth House
“Chatsworth House works beautifully for anything that leans into natural beauty and understated elegance. Think modern country, refined rustic, garden‑party romance, or minimalist styling that lets the bluestone and landscape shine. Soft, earthy tones and textural florals look incredible here. And if you’re a marquee lover, you’ll be very happy – the spaces for marquees are magic.”
“Where is Chatsworth House located, and what makes the surrounding area so appealing for destination weddings or weekend celebrations?
“We’re in Victoria’s Western District, just under three hours from Melbourne and close to the Grampians, Dunkeld, Hamilton, Warrnambool and Port Fairy. It’s a region that feels wonderfully unhurried – big skies, fresh air, and landscapes that make you want to stay a little longer. With accommodation for up to 25 guests onsite (and more if you explore glamping options), you can really settle in for the weekend with your closest family and friends. And if you’re keen, we allow recovery gatherings so everyone can soak up the atmosphere and celebrate a bit longer before heading home.”
When to enquire about hosting a wedding
“Reaching out around 12 months ahead is ideal as we only host a small number of weddings each year to keep each celebration personal and well‑supported, but we’re happy to chat at any stage. If your date is flexible or you’re planning something intimate, there’s every chance we can make it work. We’ve had some incredible celebrations come together on much shorter timelines.”
Any insider tips for making the most of this country wedding venue?
“Plan your ceremony or portraits around golden hour – the light across the paddocks and gardens is absolutely beautiful. Give yourself time to wander the property with your photographer; there are so many gorgeous pockets to explore. And make sure you step outside the Longroom or marquee after dinner for a breather… take it all in and enjoy the night sky out here. It really is something else.”
Sum up a wedding at Chatsworth House in three words…
