Heidi and Nathan admit that neither of them are terribly creative, yet when it came time to plan their wedding at the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club in Western Australia, they took the challenge head on – twice. Only months before their big day Heidi and Nathan’s home was targeted by a bunch of good-for-nothing thieves. “With everything stolen we had to start the wedding planning and purchases from scratch!” says Nathan who along with Heidi clearly made every effort to see it as nothing more than a minor speed bump.
Wanting to create “an intimate and relaxed wedding styled with clean, simple lines”, they dusted themselves off and took off on a vendor shopping spree, uncovering some of our all time favourites including photographer Natasja Kremers, florist Rebecca Grace and designer Steven Khalil – the mastermind behind Heidi’s breathtaking dress (with pockets!)
“I’ve always been in awe of Steven Khalil and the extraordinary amount of attention and detail he puts into all of his gowns, so when it came to selecting my wedding dress, he was a natural choice. I was travelling to Sydney for work, so after a visit to Steven’s boutique with a handful of ideas and pictures, I walked out with a hand-sketched design that they came to work on over the coming months, and which would become the little piece of magic that I wore on my wedding day”, says Heidi who went on to pick out stunning designs by Lover for her bridesmaids and Birds of a Feather to design their stationery.
Proving that attitude is everything, Heidi and Nathan’s day was a hit – filled with good food, fancy cars and plenty of smiling faces. “The day was made special by being able to share in the moment with our grandparents”, says Heidi. “Our families have set a shining example of what it means to love and protect; to go through life navigating through the ups and downs hand-in-hand, consoling in the losses and celebrating in the triumphs. It was nice to be able to acknowledge and celebrate the path they had lit, and for those after (like Nathan and I) to follow.”
