Keen to buck tradition, Tashi and Josh were aiming for an authentic and laid-back wedding. And they got it, guys! Secretly, they headed from their hometown of Sydney to Hobart, Tasmania, with just three besties in tow to elope.
“We knew we wanted a really relaxed day where we could just hang out and feel all loved-up,” Tashi tells us.
It looks like a darn good time, and completely on-brand for what became their overarching theme. “I jokingly said to Alex (our bestie and celebrant) that I wanted to feel like a hot, modern, renaissance, art bitch on the day, and honestly, the rest sort of unfolded from that,” Tashi says (yes, gal!).
We loved these incredible images by Jess Oakenfull so much that this banger of a day can be found on the pages of the Real Wedding Special (grab a copy for a tonne of inspo).
LITTLE LOL
“We planned to take our family to dinner the weekend after our wedding to celebrate, but because the wedding was a secret we had to work out a way to get everyone in the same place. To make sure everyone kept that night free, we asked them four months in advance not to make any plans. We had a variety of ideas of how to get them all to keep that night available and it ended up including gifting my mum flights to Sydney for her birthday. Josh and I aren’t very good at lying so we ended up getting our stories a bit muddled up and it turns out my mum was on to us from the get-go. I think at one stage I pretended there was a big work event that was under embargo that I wanted them all to come to! My dad even sent me a gmail invite for it!”
THE VENUE
“We realised what we really wanted was just to have our wedding in one place, so we started looking at AirBnBs. Josh and I did a bit of a rekkie trip to Hobart the year before our wedding so we could scope out some areas. It ended up being kind of a fun process driving around Hobart stopping to grab little treats along the way. We decided on the place because the balcony looked absolutely perfect for the ceremony, plus the interior was stunning so we wouldn’t have to worry about a backup wet weather option.”
A WORD OF ADVICE
“Literally do whatever you want. Don’t get bullied into adding things that don’t have meaning for you, and try to not get sucked in to the guilt around wedding planning. What you realise is the wedding will be what you make it, so as long as you’re having fun, your guests, your partner, everything will reflect that.”
STANDOUT VENDOR
“Our photographer Jess!! She was amazing, she made everything feel a bit more professional especially as it was just the five of us friends there. We instantly bonded with her, and she made us feel so comfortable. I remember at one stage Josh turning to me saying ‘I feel famous’, we were just so hyped up and I’m forever grateful Jess took the time to capture everything. She sent us sneak peaks the night after and the five of us crowded around my phone looking at each pic screaming. Jess was just so supportive and cool to be around, it really made an impact on the day.”
Jess Oakenfull’s photography style constantly blows us away! If you are getting married in Tassie, Jess is your gal – find her on the Hello May directory here.
