Makayla and Kiri organised their Melbourne wedding in just four months, with a theme that tried to strike “a balance between My Big Fat Greek Wedding and a smaller, more laid-back country-style day. We described it as Greek village meets Aussie country, or Grossie!” the newlyweds laugh. “Our goal was simple – great food, a banging dancefloor and just a big, fun party. So we meshed our two cultures together – think plate smashing and Greek dancing, combined with screaming Cold Chisel at the top of your lungs.” Thankfully, legendary lens lady Dee from Finder Seeker was along for the ride to capture this dream day on film, scroll down to see…
THE VENUE “Kiri was the one who found The Line and he knew straightaway it was perfect. It was a blank canvas, a bit rough around the edges and with loads of character. There was space outside to have gyros cooked on site (a dream of Kiri’s), and, most importantly, concrete floors, which meant we could smash plates!”
TOUCH OF TRADITION “Kiri is Greek Orthodox, so we had traditional Greek Orthodox ceremony. We also stepped away from tradition as usually the priest would walk the bride down the aisle, but it was really important to me that it was both my parents that walked with me. I’m so glad we made that change.”
MEMORABLE MOMENT “Smashing plates! This was Mak’s dad’s only request – he wanted to be a Greek for the night! But this was truly an absolute highlight. Having all our family and friends dancing the Zorba around us in a circle, smashing plates into the ground with all their heart… it’s something we’ll never forget.”
FAVE DEETS “Our guest book phone – we recommend this to EVERYONE! Listening to the messages our guests left us the next day (and how much funnier and less PG they got as the night progressed) was the absolute best… so many laughs! And decorating with plants, rather than flowers – the greenery looked absolutely stunning in the space, was super cost-effective and a fantastic environmentally friendly option.”
STANDOUT VENDOR “Our photographer, Dee from Finder Seeker. She was so much more than a photographer. She offered advice, gave us a wedding planning guide, checked in with us so often and gave us memories we’ll cherish forever. Not to mention all our guests loved her!
A WORD OF ADVICE “Set a budget and stick to it. Be a team. Ask for help. And if something is really important to you, find a way to make it happen – I never thought we’d find a caterer who would cook gyros over coal on site, or a venue that would allow us to do it, but Kiri was like, ‘Hold my beer’.”
