Here at Hello May, we love people that don’t always play by the rules. Mixed in a little bit of adventure and we love them even more. So when we heard about Soumali and James – an Aussie couple who traveled all the way to Copenhagen, Denmark to elope, we couldn’t wait to share their story.
Surrounded by huge ancient oak trees and beautiful red deers in a quiet forest named Jû?gersborg Dyrehave, this kind couple were married by the local mayor in front of two of their good friends living in Sweden. There to document their magical moment was Danish photographer Amanda Thomsen who tells us “Its was a super cute couple, and a beautiful cold day. They both got ready in the house they had rented, followed by a first look in their garden and then driving by taxi to the forest. Here we started by taking some portraits until the mayor came to marry them, we all cried a little. Afterwards we walked around the forest and had a little picnic with champagne and cake”.
Later the couple and their friends moved onto Restaurant Noma (nominated to be the best restaurant in the world), where we hope guests enjoyed seeing Soumali in her beautiful Lover gown as much as the food. “Kohl rabi Nordic coconuts, sea buckthorn, reindeer moss, ants, weeds – it was crazy!” says Soumali about their feast. At 22 weeks pregnant, she was allowed to eat as much as she liked. A big part of wanting to elope was not wanting to be the centre of attention, so it was the perfect end to the day for us”.
So if the idea of walking down the aisle with 250 eyes on you makes you start to hyperventilate, or perhaps you’re just not big on big weddings, we reckon this is a pretty sweet alternative.
