Let’s not beat around the bush, this DIY wedding stole our hearts and made us ever so grateful for people like Lucy and Alistair from She Takes Pictures He Makes Films, who make it their business to commit awesome days like this to film (or as technology would have it, pixels) so we can enjoy the good times long after last drinks are called.
For Mairead and Michael, a bushland wedding was what they’d wanted all along and after six months of cutting, pasting, gluing and painting they managed to transform Camp Eureka, an environmental bush camp in Yarra Junction, Victoria into a magical and beautifully styled space. “We just wanted it to be totally DIY, very rustic, romantic and outdoorsy”, says Mairead.
“We made crepe paper roses, paper garlands, origami hearts from old comic books, and we painted hearts onto hessian to make bunting. The day before the wedding, we made the table runners and Mairead’s brother created a makeshift bar with a hinged door the day before”, says Michael who meanwhile made up some dangerously good cocktails.
Wearing a simple yet stunning Nevenka gown and DIY floral crown, Mairead’s search for ‘The One’ almost went to waste. She tells us, “the morning of the wedding Michael woke up after spending the night in an insect filled hut, unable to open his left eye, presumably a mosquito or spider bite. Thankfully with anti-histamine and plenty of ice the swelling went down in time for the ceremony.”
