To newlyweds Ruby and Daniel, marriage is about “hanging out with your person, the one that gets you.” Yes to that. These cool cats, who have been together 11 years, hosted this cosy, fun love-fest for 40 of their faves at Poodle Bar in Fitzroy.
Below, the bride and groom dish on their favourite details from the day, which included their wedding album. It’s by the one and only Jackson Grant, who, deservingly, scored a standing ovation on exiting the party. There’s subtle sentimental symbolism, playful burger-place portraits and precious pooches! All things we adore. What are ya waiting for?
THE VIBE “The wedding date is Ruby’s grandmother’s birthday. They were very close, and it is a beautiful way to honour her every time our anniversary comes up. Both being big foodies and with hospitality backgrounds, the menu had to be exceptional and given the fact that the wedding guest list was small, it gave us an opportunity to have it in a cosy, smaller venue.
THE VENUE “Poodle Bar & Bistro’s style is so eclectic, so colourful and fun and fit our vibe entirely. We fell in love immediately. We were able to have the ceremony and the reception at the venue and as the wedding date landed on a Wednesday, we had it to ourselves!”
FAVE DETAILS “Our absolutely phenomenal photographer Jackson Grant, is hands down our favourite detail. His vision, style, and authenticity as a human being was exactly what we needed. Our cake, which we were very picky about (we had to try so many different cake-tasting boxes, which was so hard haha), was also incredible. We knew exactly what we were looking for, and are so so glad we discovered Cake Me Crazy. Lastly, my wedding bouquet. My mum, Robyn, was a florist (and artist, sculptor, the list goes on) before she retired. It was always my dream to have Mum create my bouquet, and I cried when I saw the finished product. It was so perfect, with poppies included to remember my Grandma, and a small piece of lace from her wedding dress, which she made herself, from back in 1952.”
THE DRESS “ I always knew I wanted to get my dress made in Vietnam. My stepmum, Yên, is Vietnamese, and I have been spending time in Saigon since I was little. Daniel and I took a trip in May to get our dresses and suits made. I found this wonderful little boutique called Poxi and fell in love with my dress. I loved the sheer sleeves, which showed my tattoos without having them on full display. I’d also never planned to have a second reception dress, but after seeing the most stunning little satin off-the-shoulder number with pearls and diamonte details, I was obsessed.”
STANDOUT VENDORS “Jackson Grant. We would hire him again just to hang out with us for the afternoon. The way he interacted with our friends and family and the moments he captured were beyond expectations. When he was finally finished for the night, he got a standing ovation, which he absolutely deserved.”
There’s more Jackson Grant magic right this way on the Hello May Directory (and contact deets too – you know you want ‘em!) Get inspired by more city nuptials on the blog, then ‘awwww’ over these adorable furry four-legged wedding guests.
