These two lovebirds have a pretty special story. After nine years together, they not only organised a wedding in Hawaii within a year (Bentley is American) but secretly got married at a registry in Melbourne only a month after getting engaged to get the Visa process going. They were keen to create Wes Anderson x Moonrise Kingdom vibes and it resulted in a pretty darn cool wedding. Shot by photographer and friend of Hello May, Dan Evans, you’ll want to scroll down for all the epic pics…
THE PROPOSAL “We were having our regular Sunday Japanese at our favourite spot in Fitzroy and I glanced out the window and saw two huge dogs. The dogs had signs on them that said ‘Marry Me’, and I thought to myself, ‘oh someone’s getting married’, then, oh shit- those are my dogs!”
THE VENUE “I just kept calling all the scout camps on Oahu to see if they’d let us have booze and Camp Kokokahi said yes. We had a rehearsal pool party, a campfire with s’mores and stayed in historic cabins on the water. We couldn’t have asked for the more perfect venue.”
DIY “My bridesmaid/best friend, Madeline and I made the ceremony macrame together in Melbourne. We were both experiencing similar family melancholy (my mum passed away in the time we were planning the wedding) so there were some tears that went into that hanging. I designed our wedding stationery and we made all the flower arrangements from locally sourced stems from Paiko, plus some extra local foraging under the cover of darkness. We put them in vintage Fowlers jars.”
LITTLE LOL “Luke’s suit purchase. One night after a bottle or more of wine between the two of us, we were looking for inspo online for his outfit, when we came across asos suits. So, we got drunk and Luke bought a millennial pink suit online. Our vibe for the wedding was Moonrise Kingdom, and pale pink is definitely on point for the Wes Anderson vibes we wanted. The next day we had inebriated online shopping regret, but it was perfect.”
REFERENCES “I actually asked Hello May on Instagram for recommendations and booked Dan Evans. We told him about the vision and asked him if he would fly Jetstar and stay in a cabin. He said yes. The experience with Dan was just ridiculous.”
STANDOUT VENDORS “Our planner, Marina of Bustle Events and Dan Evans. Having a crazy-talented wedding planner and a crazy-talented photographer were very good decisions. Going from not really thinking we wanted a photographer to booking Dan, to being led through a Hawaiian shrimp fishery in Gorman heels, it was just the most amazing experience. He really captured our adventurous side with his photos.”
