Our message has always been that there is no right or wrong when it comes to getting married. We’ve seen some couples who’ve gone all out and others who’ve chosen to have a more intimate celebration. Julie and Nathan realised early on that neither of them really liked big parties and so decided to elope instead. “One of our friends suggested that we visit them in London and elope. It seemed like an idea that was much more us, so we started looking into it”, says Julie. “We saw some wedding photographs by The Kitcheners – the stark natural beauty of the Isle of Skye seemed to be the perfect place us, and we knew we had to have those photographers too!
With that they gathered their hiking boots and led their nearest and dearest on a short adventure to a remote part of Scotland where after 10 years together, celebrant John Howieson would finally pronounce them husband and wife. “The whole day was fantastic and such a reflection of us and what we care about. That it was part of a whole week with close friends in a remote area just added to it”, says Julie who wore a dress by one of her favourite Australian designers Alannah Hill.
After their handfasting ceremony (an ancient symbol of union between two people) they made their way back down the mountain and to Flodigarry Hotel where they continued to celebrate not only their marriage but everything they’d achieved over the past decade. “In many ways, marriage was a gesture to recognise the time the time we have spent together and a demonstration of how much we will always love each other, in front of people we care about”, says Julie who was happy with the decision they’d made to getaway. “If you do what makes you happy, those who care about you will be happy for you.”
