Having spend most their lives feeling that marriage wasn’t something they’d ever consider, Mariah had a change of heart- and decided to check in with Dylan’s twin brother to see if her impending idea was a good one…”with his response being ‘hell yeah dude’ I figured I’d just go for it! We went out to a party and I drunkenly asked him to marry me that night…I then went and bought him a lollipop ring and we sealed the deal! We made it Facebook official! it was the best.”
(Are you grinning too? Yep, we thought so.)
What ensued was a 16 month engagement that, admittedly, resulted in some pretty last minute DIY efforts from the bride, including the invites, wedding favours and the stained wood welcome sign. Fortunately for the couple, their bevy of talented friends helped out with the rest. “I know a lot of really talented people, and wanted to employ them and support their work…” Mariah’s advice for fellow DIY-er brides and grooms? “If we were to do it again, I would definitely have started all the DIY projects earlier…we definitely planned the bulk of the wedding in the few weeks before hand, oh god. stress city!”
For these two, the most important vendor was their photographer- who happened to be none other than Wollongong based Mitch Pohl. “We actually picked our wedding date around his availability because the photographer was so important to me.” Mariah added that his laid back, chilled out attitude fit in perfectly with them and their guests. “Near the end of the night, Mitch turns to us both and says ‘wanna drive down to the bottle shop and get some passion pop? I’ve got a photo idea’ so we get in his car, buy a couple of bottles, shake the hell out of them, and take some photos. Passion Pop went everywhere. It was very cold and very windy. Also very hilarious!”
As far as dress hunting goes, Mariah’s experience was a little different. “WELL WELL WELL where to start… After I got engaged my mum took me to bridal stores and I’d just leave bawling my damn eyes out…nothing felt genuine…I ended up buying a dress online only for it to not be what I wanted. Thank god for crafty aunties who could create the dress (in my case, skirt and top combo) of my dreams.”
“At the end of the night when we got back to our hotel room, I brought the guest book with me. We sat in bed and read the silly notes out to each other and laughed our asses off. We were maybe a little bit ‘drunk in love’…and also alcohol!”
