Sticking to their usual weekend ritual, Remi made eggs for breakfast before having Susan join her at the table. This particular Sunday, however, was a little bit different, seeing as how Remi had a pretty big question to ask over brekkie. “When I sat down, I saw that there was a ring on an engraved fork which read ‘marry me?’. I wasn’t expecting it and was a little taken aback so the first thing I blurted out was ‘when did you do this?’, and then proceeded to ask a bunch of irrelevant questions about how and where she had the fork engraved. Remi had to point out that perhaps I was missing the point! Neither of us can actually remember what was said after that but whatever it was, there were a lot of happy tears and then I must have said yes (at some point)!”

Choosing to do things a little bit differently, Susan and Remi enlisted specialists Anteloping to help organise their celebration. “The team from Anteloping were amazing! They were there for the whole day (and into the night) and just made the whole day stress-free. With limited direction, they were able to create a fantastic day for us that surpassed anything we had imagined. Being able to balance when to have a chat and when to give the couple some space, we imagine can be difficult, but these guys have it down to a fine art. They work so well as a team and the little extra effort they put in – like topping up drinks or carrying the rings – makes everything seamless,” explains the pair, adding that they’re really glad they decided to elope.

“By keeping it small and intimate, we were able to enjoy the day and everything we had planned without having to worry about anyone else. We always hear about people barely eating on their wedding day, but we were able to enjoy all the food and were sooooo full by the end of the night,” says the couple, who opted for a homemade gingerbread cake with salted whiskey caramel (YUM!).

“I made our cake after finding a few different recipes online. I did a couple of trial runs with Remi and my daughter, Tiana, volunteering to be taste-testers. The gingerbread cake was the clear winner, so the day before we left I baked the cake and made the icing and caramel sauce. On the morning of our elopement, I woke up early and assembled it,” Susan tells us, while her now-official-partner-in-life Remi shares her favourite memory from the day.

“When Susan said her vows. There is a lot of anticipation leading into someone reading their vows, especially when they have written them themselves. I feel like I can’t even remember any of what she said on the day but what I do remember is the feeling of ‘she loves me’.”
