This bride was certainly keen to get engaged, accidentally proposing on a weekend away, before the groom got to it! “At some stage I blurted out ‘Will you marry me?’ to which he said ‘No no don’t say that!’ I started to panic thinking that he was rejecting me, but then he ran over to his backpack and pulled out a beautiful ring, got down on one knee and popped the question,” explains the bride. The fashion designer made her own veil and got that gorgeous gown from our friends over at The Bridal Atelier. THE VENUE “We started with a long list of every venue that appealed to us and then kept narrowing it down until we had a shortlist of favourites. Heide Museum of Modern Art had immediate appeal, because we loved its mix of gardens, modern buildings and art elements.”

THE THEME “Anna and I have similar tastes in design, so it was quite easy to make decisions about style by simply following what appealed to us and trusting that it would all fit together in the end. Anna also spent a lot of time looking at magazines such as Hello May. In the early days of planning, we found ourselves leaning towards clean, modern design paired with natural botanical elements in warmer colours and rust tones. Just as important to us was making sure that everyone felt welcome and relaxed. We had lawn games for our guests to play while we were off getting photos and kept the formal elements to a minimum.”

FAVOURITE DETAILS “As a baking fanatic, I was super excited about the cake. I wanted something that was a little showy, but also tasted beautiful. Zephyr & Bloom Cakes definitely delivered! Also, the food.We had a share plate menu to encourage a community feel. It had a Greek influence with delicious salads, roast vegetables and grilled meats. We had many comments on how great it was! The flowers by Poppy’s Getting Married. They were a mix of roses, orchids and native greenery in deep, winter reds.”

DIY “I had wanted an elaborate veil since sighting one in a magazine, circa 1999. With my background in fashion, I picked up my needle and thread and started to stitch away with fabrics from Tylers Fabrics and beading from Spotlight. I was inspired by Spanish mantilla-style veils, but kept the look more minimal to work back with my dress. The invite design and all of the printed elements were created by Chris. The Hungry Workshop took care of the letterpress printing and did a beautiful job.”

THE DRESS “I knew that I was not a white strapless kind of girl! I was looking for a dress that was covered in lace, with sleeves and a low back. My first place to call was The Bridal Atelier. The Theia Couture ‘Sandy’ dress immediately appealed to me. I loved the heavy lace and how the sleeves had a sense of movement. The shape was perfect, as the sleeves helped balance my curves, and I loved how glamorous the mermaid shape felt on me. It was modern and vintage all at once.”

REFERENCES “The majority of our vendors were found by combing through various websites- primarily Hello May, WedShed and Instagram.”

STANDOUT VENDORS “Our celebrant, Felicity Johnston, was absolutely lovely from the first time we spoke to her. She spent a lot of hours getting to know us and customising the ceremony to fit our story and responded to emails like a flash of lightning, which is very reassuring when you’re deep in wedding preparation! Our photographers, Kat and Scout, from It’s Beautiful Here, not only created wonderful photos but even gave my bride crew a lift to the wedding and helped the boys with their buttonholes. Their photos turned out exactly as we had wanted and they made us feel very relaxed.”
