Jill and Andy’s approach was simple – to include all the things they love. For Andy, that meant home brew beer, including his locally famous Pugstail Pale Ale, and for Jill it meant all things retro. Owner of prop hire company Retro in the Rough, Jill tells us, “As a couple, we are both lovers of retro and mid-century design, and this fit so well with the old character of Ewingsdale Hall. It was the perfect backdrop to an amazing day!”
Located only a few minutes drive from Byron Bay, Ewingsdale Hall is a charming, heritage listed building available to couples at an “attractive price”, as their website says. But for Jill its selling point was that it provided a lovely blank canvas for her to do what she does best – decorate.
While her mother kindly made their wedding cake as well as a selection of homemade jams and chutneys for their wedding favours (not to mention the bridesmaids dress too!), Jill pulled together some of her favourite things, including a green velvet three seater lounge, a mismatched collection of timber chairs, a marquee letter love sign and plenty of beautiful white lace tablecloths and transformed Ewingsdale Hall into something quite special.
Melanie’s Wholesale Flowers also contributed to their DIY day, providing stunning floral arrangements at a bargain price. And last but not least was photographer Shane Shepherd – a man whose name you may have heard more than once, simply because he’s one of the best in the business. We’re just disappointed he didn’t stay long enough to capture the moment when Jill and Andy’s mini broke down on the way home from the reception. “Luckily we were being followed by friends in a taxi!” says Jill whose advice to couples now is: “Let the day reflect who you are as a couple, and have fun with it! And if that means, you and your new hubby, waiting on the roadside the morning after your wedding, for a tow truck to collect your mini….. then do it!”
