Let’s face it – we are not exactly starved for choice when it comes to featuring a Elizabeth Taylor wedding! Never short of a proposal we are surprised she only married eight times! Howard Hughes famously proposed to Taylor by suddenly landing a helicopter nearby and sprinkling diamonds on her (she said no) and Conrad Hilton wowed her with his wealth of hotels (she said yes) but it’s her first marriage of two to actor Richard Burton (and fifth marriage overall) that has caught our attention today!

They met on set whilst filming Cleopatra in 1963. Richard had set his sights on bedding the then married star. “I just need two days with her,” he said. “It’s guaranteed.” Turns out it he was wrong. It took five. Never one to beat around the bush they were married a year later in March of 1964.

Elizabeth, ever the trendsetter, had white and yellow flowers woven through her long ponytail and rocked a sunflower yellow chiffon wedding dress, designed for her by Hollywood costume designer Irene Sharaff (who also designed her Cleopatra costumes). Upon her recent death Elizabeth’s entire haute couture collection was auctioned off at Christie’s where dresses sold for anywhere from US$6,000 – US$75,000 a piece. A grand total of US$2.6 million was raised (her jewels later sold for a staggering $137.2 million) but fret not, the yellow sunflower dress was spared. The Elizabeth Taylor Trust donated it to a museum for everyone to enjoy.
