Our Hello Vendor profiles give you the chance to meet the people behind the brand. We’ve introduced you to celebrants, fashion designers and musicians and today we are rather star struck to be catching up with stationery and signage designers Janet and Darrell of Fox & Fallow.

Tell us a bit about yourself? We’re Janet and Darrell, two high-school sweethearts, born and raised in Mount Isa, in the middle of outback Australia and we now call sunny Brisbane home.

What motivated you to start Fox & Fallow? We had such a ball designing our wedding stationery and on the day items – fun paddle fans, chalkboards, place cards etc. A year or so later I saw an advert for A Darling Affair and thought it might be a fun thing to do. We applied (without having a business or any work to date) and got accepted (still don’t know how). Then over a weekend we brainstormed a business name, registered it, created our branding, did a basic website and create a bunch of fake work for the fair! We kinda faked it until we made it, ha ha!

Describe a typical work day? Coffee. Emails. Sketching. Painting. Instagram. Emails. Coffee. Scanning. Photoshop. Emails. Emails. Emails. Did I mention emails?

Where do you find inspiration? Mostly from other designers! Instagram and Pinterest are great, but blogs and magazines are also great sources for inspo.

Talk us through your creative process? We always sketch out layout and wording and then work them up further with paint, ink or pen. We then scan and fix in Photoshop.

Talk to us about your new range… We’ve got a bunch of holiday cards coming out – Christmas, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Halloween – as well as some gift tags and large writing pads. It’s a little bit darker and moodier, with gilded touches and plenty of florals and hand lettering.

Why is Fox & Fallow different to other stationery labels? We have a broad range of styles – quirky, elegant, cute, romantic – and love to get our hands dirty and away from the computer where possible. This means we’re often hand-lettering and hand-painting which gives makes your stationery one of a kind. We offer both stationery and signage – both custom and ready-made – and our retail line which is stocked across the USA, Canada, Japan and Australia means we’ve got loads of gorgeous goodies for you to purchase year round.

What materials do you use regularly? Gouache, watercolour, ink, chalk pencils, chalk paint, timber, stain, varnish – it goes on and on! Couldn’t live without my scanner, computer, diecutter and lightbox.

Advice to couples considering DIY wedding invitations? Go for it! Some brides can definitely pull it off! But with a gazillion things to organise you can always hand it over to an expert and save yourself a bunch of time and stress ;)

Top colour combo? So hard to pick! But at the moment we’re loving richer, autumn and winter tones – navy, amethyst, burgundy, coral and blush with elegant touches of copper and rose gold. Our Fall Winter and Holiday 15/16 Collection which we’re launching soon will be a lot of these colours, so stay tuned!

Do you offer a custom design service? What does it entail? We sure do! In fact most of our invitation suites are custom, though we do offer template designs. We chat with our brides and grooms (ok realistically it mostly brides) about their wedding colours and inspiration and then create 2-3 mood boards to help set the theme for their stationery and styling. We then create 2-3 concepts and go from there.

Dream invitation? Ohh copper foil hand-lettering with stacks of romantic hand-painted florals.

Favourite soundtrack to listen to while you’re working? Depends on my mood – I love Vance Joy’s new stuff and Mumford for chilled relax times. But I’m such a sucker for 80’s power ballads!

When I was getting married I wish someone told me… Don’t do it all yourself! If I’d hired a planner or stylist, things would have been a lot easier!

Tell us everything about your dog! Name, breed and how we go about getting our paws on one… OMG that’s Geordie – he’s a big cheeky corgi with the fluff gene (I think Darrell also has that gene)!!! You can come over for pats anytime!

Check out some of their dazzling work here, here and here! Don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled for their new Fall Winter and Holiday Collection available online soon!

Oh and be sure to pick up Issue 11 and flip to page 21 for your chance to win one of their super snazzy custom chalk board signs!
