We love a humble wedding here at Hello May. The ones where values, love and the happiness of the couple shines through the simplicity of the day. The ones where family and your roots matter more than fussing over minor details. And so it was, with the wedding of Mariko and Marty, as their Japanese and Australian families came together in Melbourne in the midst of a 35 C heat wave, to celebrate into the evening together despite more than a hint of language barrier.

“Mariko’s family had just all flown in from Japan and it was like a meeting of two great oceans as the Browns/Keatings and the Oyas got to meet each other for the first time,” says Marty. “But the challenges of two families with incompatible languages was overcome in a torrent of kisses, hugs, handshakes and tender, warm smiles.”

Describing themselves as a “weird looking couple” with a 40 cm height difference, the duo met nine years earlier when Mariko came to Australia to study. She never left, and they stayed on in Melbourne, paying frequent visits to her family in Japan. Though family was the focus of their wedding day, their friends were certainly not forgotten, with a second celebration – a party extending over a weekend in a house on the beach – following their delightful family lunch. That, friends, is simplicity at its best.
