Sydney stylist Mon is a massive Gelato Messina fan. So much so she even has a flavour named after her (monoffee pie). Mon tells us “Franco surprised me by proposing at Messina one night. I did not see it coming at all! In the ice cream cabinet, where it should have said “monoffee pie” above the flavour, it said “monoffee pie will you marry me”!! It took me a while to understand what was happening- at first I thought it was the Messina boys playing a trick on me! But then everyone was yelling “turn around” and Franco was down on one knee!! It was the best proposal ever.”
Mon and Franco knew they wanted a DIY wedding with lots of vintage finds thrown in for good measure. Mon explains “we didn’t want your generic white plates, white tablecloths, run of the mill decor so over the course of 6 months I collected nearly 300 vintage plates from op shops around Sydney and about 150 vintage vases and jars. We thought it would help add some colour to the table, along with the colourful flowers (by the wonderful Holly Hipwell of The Flower Drum, mind you!). Mon loves colour and was also responsible for the massive collection of paper lanterns strung to the roof. She thought they would “brighten up the place a bit” and boy, she wasn’t wrong!
Married at the Hunters Hill Sailing Club, Mon tells us “we both knew we wanted an old sailing club as our wedding venue , it was just a matter of finding one that was old & kitsch enough, with enough character to make it memorable. When we saw the one at Hunters Hill we both knew it was perfect! It was huge, had a great view over cockatoo island, and was right next to Clark’s point reserve where we were meant to have our ceremony but it got rained out.”
Not ones to let a little rain, ahhh, rain on their parade they just picked up their decorations and moved the celebrations inside to dance the night away… and feast on a a spot of Gelato Messina of course!
Big thank you to the lovely (and ever so talented) photographer Rachel Kara for sharing these beautifully relaxed photos with us.
