After almost a year of remote planning from New Zealand, Zoie and Mike finally found themselves making the 10 hour drive from Sydney to Byron with a car load of decorations, mood boards, menus, props, top-secret outfits and to-do lists.
Despite recent bouts of hairy weather, the big day greeted them with one of the most spectacular days Byron had seen in weeks. Sunny yet mild, with dappled light everywhere you looked.
Julie Corbet was first on the scene for hair & makeup, easing the nerves of the bridal party. Zoie says “She understood us perfectly – we all wanted to look our best, but still like ourselves…and anything she applied had to withstand the tears of an emotion-charged family.”
Matt Johnson (of The Loved Ones fame and our go-to man behind the lens at Hello May magazine) arrived next… Zoe tells us Matt, or MJ as we like to call him here in the Hello May office, is “the perfect gentleman both behind & in front of the lens. He snapped away discreetly, capturing many moments before sneaking away to join the boys for some ‘man time’”
Zoie goes on to tell us “walking down the aisle of Eureka Chapel as Neil Young’s ‘Harvest Moon’ played, was something neither of us will ever forget. A respectful mix of the old & new, our ceremony consisted of Bible readings intertwined with an Eskimo love song for vows, before we made our way back up the aisle to Labi Siffre’s ‘Watch Me’
Next up the bridal party ventured to Byron View Farm where the afternoon sun was just beginning to set over the stunning hinterland. Zoie says “Matt (of course) captured it perfectly with his amazing eye and ever-original framing.”
The good folk of Eat Drink Catering transformed the property into an Italian feast – antipasti platters on the verandah & mouth-watering canapés, all to the soothing sounds of local jazz legend David Ades.
Inside the marquee, the Italian theme continued with platters of shared family-feasting fare beautifully presented on long tables flanked with Bentwood chairs from the Bentwood Chair Co, classic white tablecloths and delicate little floral jars from The French Petal.
Zoie says “our guests were encouraged to ‘get amongst it’ with nominated carvers at the table, rustic blocks of Parmagiano Reggiano and bottles of balsamic spread throughout the tables”
She concludes with “We can safely say, we had the time of our lives and almost a year on, our guests still lament on the memorable day they shared with us up in the ever-beautiful Byron Bay.”
